The following Saturday Liverpool lost 2:1 to Derby County at Anfield. Kevin Harper gave Derby an early lead. Paulo Wanchope doubled their advantage before half time. Jamie Redknapp scored a late consolation goal for Liverpool. The result left Liverpool in 8th position in the Premier League on 16 points after 12 matches. The following Tuesday Liverpool lost 3:1 at Anfield to Tottenham Hotspur in the 4th round of the League Cup. After the match, Roy Evans stepped down as joint manager of the team.
