Strasbourg were eliminated in the next round, the third round, 3-2 on aggregate by Internazionale. The 1998 UEFA Cup Final was won by Internazionale 3:0 against Lazio in Paris. This was the first time the UEFA Cup Final was played as one match - rather than over two legs.

The following Saturday Liverpool won 4:0 against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. All the goals came in the second half from Steve McManaman, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Jamie Redknapp, and Michael Owen. The result left Liverpool in 6th position in the Premier League on 22 points after 13 matches; 6 points behind leaders Manchester United. Liverpool finished the season in 3rd position on 65 points; 13 points behind champions Arsenal. In the FA Cup, Liverpool lost 3:1 to Coventry City at Anfield in the 3rd round. Liverpool reached the semi finals of the League Cup but lost 3:2 on aggregate to Middlesbrough.
