The following Sunday Liverpool won 2:1 against Sunderland at Roker Park. Robbie Fowler gave Liverpool a half time lead. Steve McManaman doubled the lead early in the second half. Paul Stewart reduced the arrears against his old club but Liverpool emerged with three crucial points. The result left Liverpool in 3rd position in the Premier League on 63 points after 33 matches; 3 points behind leaders Manchester United.
