The following Saturday Liverpool lost 2:1 to leaders Newcastle United at St. James's Park. Les Ferdinand gave Newcastle an early lead. lan Rush equalised after 11 minutes. A goal from Steve Watson in the 89th minute gave Newcastle the points. The result left Liverpool in 4th position in the Premier League on 23 points after 12 matches, 8 points behind Newcastle United. Liverpool finished in 3rd position in the Premier League on 71 points, 11 points behind champions Manchester United. They reached the FA Cup Final but lost 1:0 to Manchester United at Wembley. The League Cup run ended in the 5th round with a 1:0 defeat to Newcastle United at Anfield.
