On the following Saturday, Liverpool lost 2:1 to Norwich City at Carrow Road. Colin Suggett gave Norwich a half time lead. Martin Peters made it 2:0 in the second half. Phil Thompson scored late in the match for Liverpool but Norwich held out for victory. The result left Liverpool in 3rd place in the First Division on 23 points after 19 matches: 6 points behind leaders Nottingham Forest.
