The following Saturday Liverpool won 1:0 against Sunderland at Roker Park. The only goal was scored by David Fairclough in the 76th minute - one minute after coming on as substitute. The result left Liverpool in 1st position in the First Division on 20 points after 13 matches; 3 points ahead of Ipswich Town who had played a match less.
