(July 28, 2014) Alan Parkinson said:

We got the coach from outside the Empire in Lime Street on the Monday evening heading for the ferry at Dover for the match on the Wednesday. The match was fantastic with Toshack scoring early in the game and the reds hanging on to record a rare home defeat for Barcelona in a European tie.

Trouble broke out outside the Nou Camp after the game and I am embarrassed to say that, along with another Liverpool lad, I was hauled off to the local nick after trading punches with a group of Barcelona fans who were trying to forced their way onto our coach, to this day I still cannot work that one out. They released us a few hours later after the usual finger printing and dropped us on the main route out of town, almost peseta less and being advised by the policeman to head for Santander were we could try to catch the ferry to England (really helpful). We quickly thumbed a lift to a place called Lleida and then another lift to a service station on the outskirts of Zaragoza were we managed to persuade the cafe owner to give us a cup of coffee and a pastry in exchange for a Liverpool scarf.

It was there our luck changed when a guy sitting in the cafe noticed our Liverpool shirts and approached us to find out what had happened. He then offered us a lift in his lorry which by chance was taking a load of tomatoes to Glasgow. He hid us in the cab and smuggled us on the Santander to Plymouth ferry and dropped us off at the top of the East Lancashire road where the other guy, Billy from Widnes, phoned his Dad who picked us up in the early hours of Friday morning. The funny bit was that I was home before my mates on the coach which went via Dover and I can still remember the look on their faces when I was waiting for them outside of the old Legs of Man on the Friday afternoon as the coach pulled up. We also wrote a song on the ferry going over which I remember to this day and is sung to the tune of Viva Espana ...

Oh the Scouse are off to sunny Spain - a viva Bob Paisley
To see the Barcelona game - a viva Bob Paisley
Oh we're going there to win the cup - a viva Bob Paisley
And Johan Cruyff can go to fuck - its' Liverpool for the cup
