The following Saturday Liverpool won 3:0 against fourth placed Stoke City at Anfield. A John Ritchie own goal and a Phil Boersma goal on the stroke of half time set the victory up. Steve Heighway scored the third goal in the second half. The result continued Liverpool's strong start to the season and left them in 2nd position in the First Division on 13 points after 8 matches; 1 point behind leaders Ipswich Town.
