The UEFA Cup Final was Liverpool’s last match of the season and completed the League and UEFA Cup double. The league success was the first in 7 seasons and the UEFA Cup was the first European trophy after 9 seasons of competing in Europe. Liverpool were less successful in the domestic cups. They lost a 4th round FA Cup replay 2:0 to Manchester City at Maine Road after a 0:0 draw at Anfield. In the League Cup they were eliminated by eventual trophy winners Tottenham Hotspur 3:1 in a 5th round replay at White Hart Lane after the sides had drawn 1:1 at Anfield. They were to meet again in the UEFA Cup semi-final with a different outcome.
