Leeds United played Juventus in the 1971 Fairs Cup Final. The Final ended 3-3 on aggregate. Leeds won on away goals. This was the last season of the Fairs Cup competition. It was replaced by the UEFA Cup for season 1971-72.

The following Saturday Liverpool won 1:0 against Southampton at Anfield in their last league match of the season. Emlyn Hughes scored the only goal mid-way through the first half. Liverpool finished in 4th position in the First Division on 51 points; 14 points behind champions Arsenal. Seven days on, Liverpool lost the FA Cup Final 2 : 1 after extra time at Wembley to Arsenal who completed the domestic double. In the League Cup, Liverpool had been eliminated in the 3rd round losing 2:0 to Swindon Town at the County Ground. Don Rogers scoring both the Swindon goals.
