Ferencvaros reached the 1968 Fairs Cup Final. They lost 1:0 on aggregate to Leeds United. It was the first time an English club won the competition.

The following Saturday’s match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was postponed due to weather conditions. On the Saturday week, Liverpool won 2:0 against Southampton at Anfield. Both Liverpool goals came in the second half from Geoff Strong and Ron Yeats. The result left Liverpool in 3rd position in the First Division after 26 matches on 36 points; 3 points behind leaders Manchester United. Liverpool finished the season in 3rd place in the First Division on 55 points; 3 points behind champions Manchester City. They reached the 6th round of the FA Cup losing 2:1 to West Bromwich Albion in a second replay at Main Road after a 0:0 draw at the Hawthorns and a 1:1 draw at Anfield. Liverpool also competed in the League Cup for the first season since 1960/61 but they were eliminated in the 2nd round by Bolton losing 3:2 at Burnden Park after a 1:1 draw at Anfield.
