On the following Saturday, Liverpool’s match with Leicester City at Filbert Street was called off because of a water-logged pitch. Ten days later Liverpool won 2:1 against second placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. A Marvin Hinton own goal and a second goal from Geoff Strong gave Liverpool a two goal half time lead. John Boyle pulled one back for Chelsea in the second half. The result left Liverpool in 3rd place in the First Division after 21 matches on 28 points - the same total as Chelsea - 2 points behind leaders Manchester United. Liverpool led the First Division from late December to early March but eventually finished in 5th place on 51 points; 9 points behind league champions Manchester United. The FA Cup ended in the 5th round with a 1:0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park. They did not participate in the League Cup. In August, Liverpool had won the Charity Shield 1:0 against Everton at Goodison Park. Before the match, the League Championship trophy, the FA Cup, and the World Cup were all on display.
