The Champions League Final was Liverpool's last match of the season and meant they had won the trophy for the sixth time. They had finished second in the Premier League, 1 point behind champions Manchester City, with a club record 97 points. They lost only one league match in the entire season. Liverpool fell at the first hurdle in both domestic cups, losing 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in the 3rd round of the FA Cup and 2-1 to eventual finalists Chelsea at Anfield in the 3rd round of the League Cup.
