The following Saturday Liverpool won 3:2 against Middlesbrough at Anfield. Tucay Sanli gave the visitors an early lead, Fernando Torres scored twice midway through the first half to give Liverpool a half time advantage and completed his hat trick after an hour. Stewart Downing scored a late consolation goal for Middlesbrough. The result left Liverpool in 4th position in the Premier League on 47 points after 26 matches; 17 points behind leaders Arsenal who had played a match more.
