The Champions League Final was Liverpool's last match of the season. They had finished the Premier League in 3rd place on 68 points; 21 points behind champions Manchester United. In the FA Cup, Liverpool lost 3:1 to Arsenal in the 3rd round at Anfield. Three days after the FA Cup match, Arsenal returned to Anfield and won 6:3 in the League Cup 5th round. Julio Baptista scored four times and also had a penalty saved by Jerzy Dudek. This was Liverpool's worst defeat at home since losing 6-0 to Sunderland in April 1930. In August, Liverpool had won the Community Shield 2:1 against Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
