Liverpool lost 1-0 to Roma at Anfield but still progressed to the UEFA Cup quarterfinals (2-1 on aggregate). Gianni Guigou scored the only goal of the game while Damiano Tomassi was given his marching orders in the dying minutes!

I'm not sure I agree. My PE teacher Mr Davies always used to say "no ref has ever changed his mind so don't bother arguing with my decisions". Then the ref in Liverpool v Roma in 2001 changed his mind about a pen and we all made this point and argued with his decisions from then

The following Sunday Liverpool won the League Cup Final 5:4 on penalties after a 1:1 draw with Birmingham City at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Robbie Fowler had given Liverpool the lead in the first half. Darren Purse equalised with a penalty in the last minute. Liverpool's successful penalty kick takers were Gary McAllister, Nick Barmby, Christian Ziege, Robbie Fowler, and Jamie Carragher. The first three had come on as substitutes during the match. The League Cup was Liverpool's first trophy in 6 seasons.
