The following Sunday Liverpool won the League Cup Final 5:4 on penalties after a 1:1 draw with Birmingham City at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Robbie Fowler had given Liverpool the lead in the first half. Darren Purse equalised with a penalty in the last minute. Liverpool's successful penalty kick takers were Gary McAllister, Nick Barmby, Christian Ziege, Robbie Fowler, and Jamie Carragher. The first three had come on as substitutes during the match. The League Cup was Liverpool's first trophy in 6 seasons.
